Vertical Farm: agriculture and innovation in Torrita di Siena

The past 15th September 2023, in the historical centre of Torrita di Siena, the first Italian and third in the world public underground Vertical Farm has been opened to the public. The innovative system was designed ad set up by engineer Matteo Benvenuti in collaboration with Vertical Farm Italia group. Until now, thousands of people have visited it.

The idea of vertical farm, is not so recent and dates back to the early years of 20th century. However, only in 1984 the Canadian biologist John Todd conveyed the concept of an ecosystem building in his book “Progettare secondo natura”. Since then, the phenomenon has become widely spread.

What is a vertical farm? A vertical farm is a self-sufficient hydroponic system for sustainable agriculture. Its uniqueness depends on the fact that it is located in the underground path that crosses Torrita di Siena for 186 meters, once used as air-raid shelter. Thanks to the constant temperature and light conditions of the tunnel, the facility allows the continuous production of a variety of vegetables and plants. With over 500 plants on a surface of 6 square meters, the production is equivalent to a 50 square meter garden active all year round.

The garden can be managed remotely thanks to a technological comprehensive setup, however, trained volunteers periodically plant and harvest the produce.
The one in Torrita is the first case of indoor vertical farming to be owned by a municipality.

Both the tunnel and the farm are opened to the public. You must previously book the experience through the Torrita Nascosta website.
Torrita Living also offers two different types of touristic tours:

Do not hesitate to book your visit!
