The Oscuri Theatre of Torrita di Siena between past and present
The first nucleus of the Oscuri Theatre of Torrita di Siena was born in 1776, after the creation of the Accademia degli Oscuri in 1763. The Academy, arose for the willing of some forward-looking citizens, chose the motto Ab umbra lumen to underline that the academy would only spread the light of truth.
In the following years, the Theatre evolved together with the Academy, gaining its current form just in 1866. When the two wars broke up, the theatrical activity was suspended and the theatre transformed into a picture house. The theatre was then used as the headquarters of the local PNF section and in 1955 it was gained by the Municipality of Torrita, which preserved the name in memory of the historical Academy.
