Porta a Sole

This opening was not present in the oldest defensive structure, and is not visible in the drawing of the castle wall reconstruction dated 1528, the result of the renovation project entrusted to the Sienese architect Baldassarre Peruzzi.

The gate is mentioned for the first time in the Statutes in force in 1559. It is believed that the date of its opening dates back to the second half of the 16th century, when the village of Torrita ceased to be a military outpost, the battlements and patrol walkways were eliminated, and the passageway on the south side was opened. It was called the Porta a Sole (literally “Sun Gate”) due to its orientation. It was dedicated to St. Giuseppe, because of the presence of carpenters’ workshops.
