Follonica Paved Road

Below the Follonica Gate, you can see an ancient paved road recently rediscovered following work by the local village association. Experts consider this road to date from the Middle Ages but it probably followed an older Roman route. It was the main road that led up to Montefollonico from the Abbey of Follonica and then continues from the opposite side of the village, by the Church of Triano in the direction of Montepulciano. In parts the road is about 7 metres wide with channels across the track to redirect the course of rainwater. The stone used was excavated on the spot and in some places existing stone was simply levelled without being excavated.

Route of Roman origin; the visible pavement has been dated to the Middle Ages
