Ancient Walls of Torrita di Siena

It is hypothesised that the first nucleus of Torrita arose from the need to secure the site that was gradually expanding, due to the arrival of new inhabitants coming from mixed rural settlements of ancient origin, such as the Pagus di Ascianello, one of the first settlements at the origins of Torrita, in that phenomenon better known as encastellation. It is certain that from 1208 onwards the Castle of Torrita began to be mentioned, walls were erected to defend it and bastions and towers were built, hence the name Turrita.

Over time the walls were destroyed and rebuilt several times, in a continuous succession, until in 1554 the town lost its role as an outpost on a territory that had always been disputed. From then on, the walls would no longer be an instrument of defence, but would be completely transformed by being used as shops and dwellings, and their perimeter would remain a simple demarcation line for the Torrita community.
